A letter to Zoe

Dear Zoe :

It was a pleasure to see you or run into me at the State hiring event a few weeks ago. I am sorry I did not recognize you because I was focused on getting into the event. So I am sorry for that.

I have not seen you for quite a while and I did not know you had graduated from highschool. This is a momentous achievement and one should be celebrated. Attached to this letter is a card of congratulations and a small gift for you and celebrating your achievement.

On this occasion, I would like to celebrate with you and say well done.

Although your grandfather is no longer with us,  let me say a few things about him and our relationship as not friends but brothers.

You grandfather and I have been friends since 1977. We were classmates at Greater Baltimore Junior Academy. We were 7th graders and became fast friends. We were cut from the same cloth.

His father as well as mine had served in the US Army in World War 2 and his mother and mine both were in the medical field.

In high school we both attended different schools,  but we found a way to stay connected by phone calls and meet ups at school dances or hanging out at Drew Hill park.

Throughout the years we continued our friendship through the highs and lows.

When he met your grandmother, he said he found his soulmate. In her he found not only her but a family as well that he grew to love as his own. He loved being a married man. He loved being part of a big family. He loved to touch his family. He loved each and everyone because they gave him a sense of belongingness.

Your grandfather was a strong man. He was intelligent, and yes funny as well. We Loved him for who he was and what he gave to us.

I am quite sure he would have been very proud that you have achieved this big victory. But I know he would also say to you keep doing good. Do good for you but also for your mother and the rest of the family. You have your whole life ahead of you. Dream big and keep moving.

You have grown up to be a fine young lady. Do good. Look to God and Keep the faith.

This letter was written to by best friend who passed two years ago. I did not know she had graduated from highschool because we have not had any contact since my friend passed. I just wanted to celebrate her and my friend and to tell her that he would be very proud of her.

I had been knowing Zoe since she was 3. She is I think older than my son by about a year.
